Modern Foreign Languages
The Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) department is made up of three full-time and three part-time specialist teachers of French and Spanish. It is an experienced and dedicated team of enthusiastic linguists with a commitment to ensuring the success of students. Every year, we have a Foreign Language Assistant. This enables students to practise their spoken language with a native speaker on regular basis.
Each room in the MFL department has an interactive whiteboard and desk top computers are available in one classroom. A set of bookable web-books are also available in the department. We are continuously adapting resources and schemes of work at both KS3 and KS4 and as a guide we follow ‘Studio’ and ‘Expo’ course books in French and ‘Mira’ for Spanish. Books, dictionaries and online resources are used effectively in lessons and for independent study. The department is well resourced with audio visual equipment including ‘Active Teach’ for ‘Mira’, ‘Studio’ and ‘Expo’. We have access to digital/interactive resources, flashcards, ‘qwizdom’ and DVDs.
KEY STAGE 3
All students learn French or Spanish regardless of ability throughout KS3. All Year 9 students are entered for the FCSE qualification which prepares students well for GCSE level studies. The department works closely with the Gifted and Talented co-ordinator to provide students with opportunities to enrich and extend their learning in their lessons as well as outside of the classroom. Furthermore, the work of the department is assisted by the Head of Learning Support and Teaching Assistants. Students explore the following topics at KS3:
- Myself and others
- Where I live
- Fair Trade
- Healthy Living
- Spain and the Spanish Speaking World
- French and the French Speaking World
