There is a strong international dimension within the curriculum at St. James’s. We aim to raise students’ aspirations and equip them to take their place as global citizens. All students at St. James’s are encouraged to be aware of others through our ‘ME:WE’ ethos and the global idea that Every Child Matters Everywhere. We have just been awarded the prestigious Full International School Award.

At St. James’s we celebrate a variety of events which encourage and support the school’s international dimension such as Peace One Day, Fair Trade Fortnight, National Sports Week, World Book Day, European Day of Languages and World Maths Day, to name but a few. Every year we commemorate the Holocaust during Holocaust memorial week.

In the Modern Foreign Languages Department at St. James’s, there are lots of opportunities to get involved with activities to broaden horizons. Language Leaders lead language and cultural based projects which include delivering French and Spanish lessons to local primary schools. Additional language clubs in addition to curriculum languages (French and Spanish) take place in support of the Duke of Edinburgh Award and our Chair of Governors runs a Latin Club at lunch times.

We offer a wide range of opportunities for educational study visits abroad including Barcelona, Berlin and Paris which allow students to broaden their horizons. St. James’s is proud to have links with schools in Spain and France, Egypt and Ecuador.

Our most recent school link is with Okba Ibn Nafea Preparatory School in Alexandrea, Egypt. This link is part of the International Inspiration Programme, which is designed to enrich the lives of more than 12 million children in 20 countries across the world. We will be working in partnership with the British Council, UNICEF and UK Sport to spread the Olympic Spirit into Egypt. Click Here to learn more about this exciting new venture.

Furthermore, in RE, pupils have been working on a project called Face To Faith, a project which, using digital technology, brings together Students of different faiths and cultures. As part of this project, pupils have recently taken part in a video conference with a school in Indonesia.

Fundraising at St. James’s has allowed us to help to provide books for BISEE Books, a charity which aims to inspire a love of reading in disadvantaged schoolchildren in Ecuador. The BISEE Book Bus is stocked with books, materials and volunteers, and travels from school to school. For many of the children in these Ecuadorian communities, the only way out of poverty for them is education, and the BISEE Book Bus aims to inspire them through reading to make a difference to their lives. We learn from our Ecuadorian neighbours about the importance of things in life which money cannot buy, such as faith and family. Last year, Staff from St. James’s walked the distance of Hadrian’s Wall over 5 days to raise money for this worthy cause. Click here to find out more about BISEE Books.

All our International Links represent an extension of the family of St. James’s which we are all proud to belong to.
